Those of you who know me know I am a planner, through and through. However, this trip is different. I committed to going with the flow, and letting our travels evolve organically. We’re kind of just figuring it out as we go, and that’s turned out to be a wonderful thing. This brings me to our final week in Rome, and it was time to decide where to go next.
Though we had previously dreamt of going to Spain, we didn’t really think it was in the cards on this trip due to proximity to everything else we wanted to do…there are only so many euros and passport days to go around! But when Sean brought up Barcelona as a destination for our birthdays (which are four days apart), I decided to look into it…just in case. It turned out flights from Florence to BCN were super cheap (we’re talking’ €50), and we knew it was going to be the perfect place to kick back on the beach for a few days.
The allure of the beautiful Mediterranean beaches wasn’t all Barcelona had to offer–imagine the laid-back feel of Maui mixed with the fashion-forward attitude of LA, and throw in a little Vegas Strip drinking and gambling, and you’ve got the right idea. We spent the majority of any sunny day at the beach, and the rainy days in coffee shops and cafes. Our favorite was SPICE, where they offer delicious espresso and homemade cakes…and free Wi-Fi 😉
We wandered La Rambla, grabbed clara (basically a beer and lemon soda shandy) and tapas near the ocean, shopped the weekend pop-up market, walked the streets of Poble Sec admiring the street art, and even found a Mexican food restaurant to stifle our ever-growing craving.
Overall, it was a beautiful week of napping on the beach and bumming around town.
